Swimming Lessons at Waves Swim School

Swimming Lessons

We offer swimming lessons for children from the ages of 4 and upwards. Details of these can be found below. As part of our lessons we offer a range of awards and are guided by the ASA National Teaching Plan. We have outlined the levels in the National Teaching Plan below.

Swimming Lessons

Our swimming lessons are available during term time between 4.00pm - 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am - 2.00pm on Saturday.

We teach children according to the ASA National Teaching Plan for Swimming Teachers.

Children's lessons are taught in small groups by highly
qualified and experienced staff according to their ability to
ensure each child receives tuition appropriate to their needs.

The ASA National Teaching Plan Stages are as follows:

Stage 1- Developing basic safety awareness, the 'class' scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. arm bands, floats etc.

Stage 2 - Developing safe entries to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travel and rotation unaided to regain upright positions. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. arm bands, floats etc.

Stage 3 - Developing safe entries including submersion, travel up to 10 metres on the front and back, progress rotation skills and water safety knowledge.

Stage 4 - Developing the understanding of buoyancy through a range of skill, refining kicking technique for all strokes, and swimming 10 meteres to a given standard as directed by the ASA.

Stage 5 - Developing 'watermanship' through sculling and treading water skills, and complete rotation, also performing all strokes to the given standard as directed by the ASA.

Stage 6 - Developing effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing; developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise.

Stage 7 - Developing quality stroke technique up to 100 metres, incorporating skills learnt and combing them to develop a linked routine and complete successfully an obstacle course that combines a variety of skills accomplished throughout Stages 1-7.

Once the swimmer has developed the core range of skills required to be confident, competent and safe in the water through Stages 1 -7, the swimmer may then have the choice to take part in different aquatic disciplines.

Stages 8 - 10 of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming are available in competitive swimming, synchronised swimming, rookie lifesaving and triathlon.

For children that have not followed the ASA National Teaching Plan we offer the following structure:

Beginners - Non swimmers who cannot yet swim 5 metres independently on their front or back.

Improvers - Children who can swim 5-10 metres on their front or back.

Intermediates - Children who can swim 25 metres on their front or back and be happy in deep water.

Competent - Children who can swim 100 metres with good technique on their front and back and be confident in deep water.

Advanced - This is designed for the children who like the challenge of learning advanced swimming techniques without the pressures of a swimming club.

Private Lessons

For those who would prefer the exclusivity of a one to one
private lesson with our staff, these are available at just
20 per 30 minute lesson.

Pool Parties

We are able to accommodate Pool Parties upon request.

Note: Children under 8 years of age and non swimmers must be accompanied by an adult in the water.
